We’re excited to introduce our new features for the summer. In this July release, we’ve added some highly requested features so take a look below.

Copy PDF (Desktop)

We’re excited to introduce a highly requested feature from our users from our Feature Requests Board. For those that constantly like to export a selection of PDFs, we’ve created a feature to copy PDFs to your clipboard.

copy pdf files in readcube papers desktop app

As of now, this feature is available in the desktop app. Your PDFs will need to be downloaded in order to be copied. You can paste these PDFs to a folder, Slack, or any other application that accepts files.

SmartCite is about to make your research smarter. Starting next week you will be able to click “Convert to Links” in the options menu to format your paper with hyperlinked citations.

Public Lists & Permission Changes (Desktop/Web)

Last release we introduced a new feature called Public Lists. We saw our users sharing these on Twitter and we are ecstatic that you have put this to use already!

We received some confusion from our users on sharing public lists vs shared libraries so as a small update we have made changes with how these are shown in the app. Instead of “Edit” under the Shared Libraries we have renamed this to “Share with People and Groups”. This is for adding people to see the full text and annotations you have created. Please remember to share responsibly.

public list permission changes

Discover more ways to use Public Lists whether it’s promoting your own work or sharing with your Journal Club.

Tab Switching with Hotkeys (Desktop)

tab switching management

Easily switch between your different tabs in the desktop app with our new keyboard shortcuts.

ePDF List Management (Desktop/Web)

Manage your Libraries and Lists while reading any article. Toggle the list management menu by hovering over “In Library” at the top right of the enhanced reader. Quickly add or remove from lists with links straight to your libraries and see at a glance where everything is sorted.

Other Notable Features/Updates

 • Papers 3 Import Improvements – Includes SmartLists (Colors, Ratings, Last Opened, etc)
 • Browser Extension Updates – Updates and bug fixes
 • Usage Improvements – Full Library export to RIS (.ris) format
 • Usage Improvements – Cloud icons will appear next to PDFs not downloaded
 • Usage Improvements – Ability to postpone app updates

We’re back with new features from our May update.

Papers Import improvements

RIS and BibTeX files come from all sorts of places. We’ve vastly improved our RIS and BibTeX import and even added some fancy messages to help you figure out where you(or the place you got it from) went wrong. We’ve also made the import much laxer. So if you have a reference’s date as “Armageddon” we won’t instantly fail on import for the whole file. We just might skip inputting that date.

BibExample

Theme Support

Everyone was loving dark mode so much on the iOS app that we brought it to you on the web and desktop! By default, the app will use whatever theme you have set for your computer settings. But fear not. You can always switch by clicking on the Papers icon in the top left on the web, or by going to your papers settings on the desktop! We hope you enjoy the new look. I know I’ll certainly sleep better at night without all the extra blue light!

Dark Mode Papers Desktop

SmartCite Improvements

Ever been knee-deep in the paper and thought to yourself “I can’t switch reference managers now. I’ll lose countless hours of my life and my cat won’t respect me anymore”. We have introduced Convert from EndNote in SmartCite! This will convert your document, citations, and bibliography into SmartCite so that you can continue on your merry way. This is currently in beta so we recommend saving your document before converting. For cat respect, I suggest wet treats. Always works with mine!

EndNote Screen
Endnote Citation Converter Screen

Recommendations to a Shared Library

Have you ever had a shared library that you wanted to import your recommendations straight to? Or maybe you are using the ReadCube search to find new content. Well as of today you can now dump those references straight into a shared library of your choosing. As always if you want to import to a certain list you can always drag and drop.

Shared Library import

Screen Usage Improvements

We made several improvements to the app to make research life the best life. The last 5 searches you have made in your library will show when you click the search box and it will try and autocomplete those results as you search. We also added tag prediction so if you start typing a tag it should try and autofill for you. We’ve also enabled you to highlight and select the text on the right pane. So if you want to quickly grab the title or a piece from the abstract, go ahead and do so.

Text Selection

You can now select(and therefore copy) text on the right pane. Makes it easy to quickly grab the title or part of the abstract to send off in an email or put in a Powerpoint.

See your previous searches and quickly pull them back up! Also, any search query will try and find any tags with that text so you can quickly search for references with a specific tag.

Saved Search

Custom CSL Support

If you have created custom CSL’s to use in SmartCite you can now use them on the web or desktop. Simply upload the style in SmartCite and then reload or relaunch the desktop app. These styles will be searchable just like regular styles and will allow you to use them in the export pane to preview the results!

Custom CSL

Public Lists

Have you ever had a list or library that you took hours to curate and wanted to share with the world? Public lists will allow you to do just that! We’ve broken down all the ways you can use public lists in your everyday workflows whether it’s sharing with your Journal Club, promoting your personal research and much more!

Browser Extension Updates

We have updated the browser extension to support more Journals and to fix some layout changes on PubMed and other publisher websites. We are continually updating the extension so remember if you spot a publisher we aren’t supporting yet to send us a shout at support@papersapp.com

We’re excited to start the new year off with some new updates for your Papers library! Join us for a walkthrough of the newest features in our Papers Product Release Webinar.

Papers 3 Importer (Desktop)

For our Papers 3 users, we have upgraded the desktop importer to make transferring libraries even easier. Instead of having a separate app we now have folded our new importer into the desktop app. We’ve added extra support for importing your notes, annotations, and lists so you receive an alert once the transfer is complete, instead of micro-updates.

For detailed instructions on migrating your library over please visit our guide on How do I transfer my Library from Papers 3 to the new ReadCube Papers?

SmartCite for Google Docs
(Web)

We’ve made some UI changes for SmartCite for Google Docs. Now you can easily edit references directly within SmartCite to correctly cite your manuscripts.

Choose to add specific page number or chapter, add a prefix or suppress author names and more.

Edit reference in Google Docs

If the fields above still don’t meet your citation requirement you can manually override any citation style.

If the fields above still don’t meet your citation requirement you can manually override any citation style.

SmartLists (Web)

Smart Lists are a great way to organize your Papers library, however, they can be a little intimidating to build if you aren’t sure what queries to create. That’s why we’ve created an easier way to add pre-curated SmartLists to your library!

Take a look at our list below to see some highly requested SmartLists. Simply click on the links and the list will take you to your library where it will find the articles to match the query.

Read our 5 Types of Organized SmartLists and discover more SmartLists to add to your Papers library for easy organization.

As an added bonus you can now also sort SmartLists so if you navigate away, once you return it will be sorted the way you want.

Sort SmartLists in Papers Library

Enhanced Web Reader (Web/Desktop)

A big feature request we’re excited to release is the addition of Tags on the enhanced web reader! Your list of Tags however big or small will now appear on the Notes panel of the panel.

Enhanced Web reader Tags

You can add new Tags by selecting the + button. Once your Tag is name it will appear on the PDF and a new Tag folder will be created in your library. To remove any tags, however over the name and select the X button.

While this Thanksgiving may have looked different for a lot of us, our team is still working hard to bring you new features into the suite of Papers apps.

SmartCite for Word Improvements

SmartCite is the fastest and easiest way to cite your references. SmartCite for Word now allows you to choose certain page numbers, suppress authors, and more! We even added the ability for you to fully customize the citation.

Just click on a reference to bring up this menu or click on the edit icon in the top right to edit the whole citation. We hope you enjoy this new functionality and want to know what you think.

Store Organizations as Authors

To also help with referencing, you can now save Organizations as authors by going to your “Edit Metadata” pane. You will need to add “~” to the end to override Papers from treating it as “First Name” “Last Name”. For instance: World Health Organization would be “World Health Organization~”

Default Citation Style

With over 9,000+ citation styles in our database, it can become cumbersome to continually search for your desired style. Now you can set your favorite style as your go-to for those times you just need to quickly copy a reference. Head to the new General menu in Papers Settings and select your Default Citation Style.

We’ve also added the ability to select multiple items in your library and quickly copy all in your chosen style to generate a bibliography quickly.

Tab Persistence

When closing the desktop app you will now receive a prompt to save any open tabs before quitting. When you reopen Papers all your opened articles will be saved.

Tab Persistence in Papers

You can also set the app to remember your preference in the new Settings menu. Choose whether multiple tabs always stay open, never remember or continue to get the notification when closing Papers.

Other Notable Features/Updates

 • Citekeys Update – Can now select multiple citekeys for articles
 • Enhanced Preview Pane – Works offline for downloaded PDFs
 • Browser Extension – Now remembers previously selected lists
 • Google Search – Added to the preview pane
 • Missed out on last month’s feature update? Read it now!

We’re excited to bring you a slew of new features to the Papers app right in time for back to school!

Papers 3 Importer (Desktop)

For our Papers 3 users, we have upgraded the desktop importer to make transferring libraries even easier. Instead of having a separate app we now have folded our new importer into the desktop app. The importer will still transfer over all your references, notes, annotations, lists, and smart lists into the new app

For detailed instructions on migrating your library over please visit our guide on How do I transfer my Library from Papers 3 to the new ReadCube Papers?

Retracted Articles via the Browser Extension (Web)

Our browser extension now has additional support for retracted articles. If you find an article that is retracted or withdrawn we will now show a warning on it next to the buttons.

Note, this will not work on DOI’s that are retraction notices. Notices will only show on articles where the DOI’s are removed.

Edit Authors (Desktop & Web)

We’re excited to implement a new way to edit authors instead of removing them all. You can adjust the name of an author and edit the order easily by hovering over the name to show the Edit and Move button.

We have also made this work on any field that has multiple names in the field(Editors, Inventors, contributors, etc.).

Patent Matching and Enhanced Support (Desktop)

In addition to indexing over 160+ million journal articles, we are excited to introduce patent matching. Now easily upload patents the same as you would any journal article and automatically have Papers match the patent to the correct ID. Explore full information from the details pane and even discover related information via Dimensions.

Note, this enhanced feature is currently available for our Enterprise customers. Please contact our sales team if you are interested in this module.

Other Notable Features/Updates

 • DOI’s for Citekeys – Instead of using just a citekey you can now copy the DOI and use that to reference
 • Sort by notes column – Add additional sorting options
 • Search Improvements – New searches by type & color query
 • Tags – Edit the order of tags on a reference via the metadata pane
 • Metadata Improvements – Helpful tips for resolving articles now appear
 • Missed out on last month’s feature update? Read it now!

SmartCite for Citekeys

his month brings a new way to cite papers. While SmartCite is consistnatly having new improvements over the past couple of months we have developed a new way to cite your papers using citekeys.

To setup citekeys and start using Smartcite for Citekeys please see our Citekey Management article.

citekeys

This workflow works with PagesWordLibreOffice, and more so take a look!

Browser Extension

Our browser extension is updated with new features. You can now import on any website that isn’t recognized as an article and it will be imported to your library as a web page reference.

Once in your library, you can easily navigate back to the webpage by clicking on the URL link via the information panel.

Recommendations for Lists in Shared libraries image

We also made some changes to the extension icon. It will now grab all of the search results and display them for you.

It includes easy link outs to the DOI as well as an option to select all the results and import them into your library.

If only one reference is on the page you can add notes to the reference straight from the browser extension.

BibTex Copy to Clipboard

You can now simply right click on a single or group of papers and copy the BibTeX to your clipboard. This was a much-requested feature that we are happy to get in your hands.

Papers Citekey Management panel

Search Query Improvements

We have now included some of the operators as part of the spyglass. These search operators will always show up at the end of the query with the correct spacing so try it out when you feel like making better smart lists!

new inverted dark mode for the ReadCube Papers Enhanced Web Reader

Enhanced PDF Search

Introducing our enhanced search. While having the PDF open simply use the finder keyboard shortcuts (CRTL + F on Windows or CMND + F on Mac) to open the new search pane. This search pane will show you a snippet of the word surrounded by the text it’s around. Click on any of the references and the page will jump automatically to its location.

What’s that you say? You want it on the preview window as well? Done and we also added page thumbnails and document outline to the preview bar.

Other Notable Features/Updates

 • Download Proxy Text – simplify messages for Locate PDF
 • Metadata Improvements – updated metadata order
 • Date Modified – added as a library organization field
 • Draggable search results – drag and drop search queries or recommendations into specific lists
 • Save Search – when searching via the internal search engine your previous query is saved
 • Citekey Search – easily find your citekeys via the desktop app

]]>
We’ve been hard at work implementing new features from user feedback and our feature release board. Since we’ve been receiving such great feedback, we decided to release a few features early this month. Take a look below to see what’s new.

First up is Preview Annotations. In the last release, we introduced the preview pane, which was a popular feature coming from Papers 3. As an enhancement, you can now see your annotations on preview as well. This is still a read-only view, but it should make it easier to see your annotations quickly without opening the full PDF.

Preview annotations on Papers app

For some additional organizational features, we have added the Date Modified field. This field is updated anytime you add, update, or remove an annotation by yourself or on a shared library. Right-click on the column title bar to add it to your library.

Date Modified field in Papers

In the last release, we introduced Citekey Management to the desktop app. Citekey Search is now available in this quick release. You can search a citekey using:

citekey:baker.2019

Searching with citekeys that contain a “:” might give some funky results so we suggest you regenerate your citekeys so that they use a period by default.

Citekey search in Papers library search bar

Finally, we added a highly requested feature to add articles found in the internal search engine to lists. Simply drag and drop any reference you want into Lists and sub-Lists directly. This works with Recommendations as well.

As an added benefit to search, you can now save any queries you enter into the internal search engine. You no longer need to retype the query after opening a PDF.

That’s all for this quick update, as always please reach out to our support team for any questions and we look forward to releasing more new features later this month!

In this month’s update, we’re excited to release the new PDF Preview pane. Now, you can view a preview of the full-text article without it disappearing.

Papers Article Preview toggle

When you toggle the Preview icon to show the preview the PDF will stay on your screen. If you rather not have the PDF shown, simply toggle the preview icon off.

Shared Library Recommendations

One of our most popular features just became even better. Now in the Recommendations tab you can search for new papers both in your Personal and Shared Libraries.

What’s more, you can even select the folder from a specific library to receive recommendations based on all the articles in that list.

Citekey Management

One of our biggest updates this month is our new Citekey management. Now, if you are using Papers alongside a BibTeX file by people writing in LaTeX and similar environments, we have now added in the ability to autogenerate citekeys.

When importing items into your library you can choose to use the original citekey or choose to overwrite the citekey with the new Citekey Management menu.

Papers Citekey Management panel

Enhanced Dark Mode

We previously updated our web reader to include dark mode for enhanced reading support. In this update we have now added the option to select a Dark + Inverted mode allowing both the PDF and background to be completely dark.

Other Notable Features/Updates

 • Smart Lists are now sorted alphabetically
 • Last Used Style – In Export pane last used style remembered
 • Support Bibtex – New file type of .bibtex supported
 • Notes Column – See your notes in a column
 • Show Annotations type – On notes panel see the difference between underline, strikethrough etc.

ACCESS OVER 26 MILLION ARTICLES WITH THE
COVID-19 RESEARCHER PASS

ReadCube, along with leading publishers, Wiley, JAMA, and Springer Nature, are excited to announce a new initiative to facilitate access to literature related to COVID-19 research.

The COVID-19 Research Pass (CRP) program provides direct access to over 26 million articles and is available to anyone studying COVID-19.

COVID-19 Research Pass Program image

Content can be saved to your ReadCube personal/shared libraries, downloaded, or printed. While you can search directly through the portal, access will also be flagged directly in the Papers browser extension seamlessly.

You can also create public links where you can share full-text articles (read-only) with notes and annotations for fellow community members.
