We are excited to announce we’ve added brand new features to the ReadCube Papers Web Importer (browser extension) – making it even easier for you to discover and get access to the articles you need across the web.

For those who are new to our Web Importer: Our Web Importer lives in your browser and helps ensure any new papers you come across on the web make it into your ReadCube Papers library, without you having to download and manually import it yourself.

While on any of your favorite sites, you’ll see an “Add to Library” button. With a single click, our nifty importer will immediately try to import the full-text PDF version (and available supplements) into your library. For content you may not have access to, the importer always retrieves the article’s metadata. This ensures you have the reference in your library, leaving you more time to find new scholarly literature.

Exciting New Changes [August 2020]

  • First and foremost, the ReadCube Papers Web Importer is now available across multiple browsers. Users can download the extension on Chrome, Firefox, and Edge (Safari support is still in the works). If you’re already using the ReadCube Papers Web Importer make sure you are on the latest build.
  • Bulk Adding – if you are in the middle of discovering new articles across the web you can now quickly bulk import your search results from a single page. Whether you’re on PubMed, Google Scholar or Dimensions select the browser extension > choose which articles to import > Add to Library
PubMed and Dimensions with bulk importer on Papers browser extension
  • Web Clippings – easily add websites, news articles, and other non-journal references into your library. When you’re on a website simply click the Papers logo on the browser extension and the web clipping will grab the URL and title of the page you are on. Add in notes and then select which library to import into.

**Please note, Enterprise and Site license customers may have different import configurations in place. Please refer to your administrator or contact us for specific settings.

Exciting New Changes [July 2019]

  • Find papers as you normally would across discovery sites like Dimensions, PubMed, Google Scholar, BioRxiv, and most journal websites. Our extension instantly recognizes if a paper is in a personal or shared library collection. It will also check if an article is Open Access. If it’s not, it will try to download through your library subscription if you’ve set your proxy up in your account and deposit it into your ReadCube Papers library.
Drop down on Browser Extension

  • We listed it above, but we wanted to highlight the VIEW PDF feature… If you already have access to the PDF (and see the VIEW PDF button), you can instantly stream the article in your current window. The same Enhanced PDF reading experience will be available, including supplements, inline references, annotation and drawing tools, and more. That’s right… no extra steps… no redirects… no sending you off to another tab….
  • For enterprise customers who have enabled our integrated document delivery service, we’ve consolidated that functionality so you can easily leap over paywalls wherever you are discovering papers across the web.

We’d love to hear your feedback! Share your thoughts (and questions of course) via support@papersapp.com.

ReadCube Papers is more than just a place to store those PDFs. With Papers, we want to help enhance your research and allow you to discover articles smartly. Papers provides different metrics behind each article to help you go beyond using search engines.

Library Metrics

Every article imported into Papers will display a Metrics tab in your library. This tab contains metric article information to help show the relation of your article to your library. You can also discover new items directly from the tab.

full metrics pane of article

You’ll find the full citation count at the top of the Metrics pane, the Relative Citation Count. The graphs below display how widely cited the article is since its publication date. You can also view the chart annually to see which year the article was most mentioned.

Citations

The citation panel gives you the full list of citations from the article. Each one contains a hyperlink to take you directly to that article page to discover more information.

Add the article directly into your library or start reading from where you are.

Mentions

Lit review just became easy… and fun! The Mentions column will pull out how each other from the full list of citations, directly used the information from the article in your library.

Take a glance at how other researchers are using the article in your library. Are there similarities, is this article a fluff piece? Now you can get a snapshot at just how relevant an article is to your area.

Recommendations

The Recommendations feature ensures you never miss another essential paper. Papers gives highly personalized recommendations of new articles based on your library content and reading habits. The feature is a perfect match for your existing discovery strategy.

Dive deep into recommendations based on the library you are working with. Choose whether to find new articles from either your Personal or Shared Library.

shared library recommendations

Choose lists to narrow down recommendations by a particular project (especially helpful for new and side projects.)

list specific library recommendations

Set timeframes for recommendations to see articles published in the last week, two weeks, last month, three months, and more.

publication range recommendations

Click on the recommended article to view abstract and additional article information – as you do for papers already in your library. Interested in reading – click to download – and if you have access through your proxy, the article will automatically download and import to your library. If not, we will take you to the page where you can get access.

Remember, the more you use ReadCube, the smarter the algorithm gets. As you build your library and read in ReadCube, the list becomes more and more fitted to you and your research pursuits.

Another way to ensure you never miss a paper is our Related Article feed.
You’ll find this located on the top left when you open any PDF in the ReadCube Papers Web Reader.

Our related article feed looks at the full text of the article you have open and then compares it against our publication database, including over 105 million full-text articles. The feed is pulling out keywords and from other papers that highly match the one you are reading.

What’s more, each related article will show if you have access to the article, the article is in your library, or how to add the article for future reading.

Article Metrics

The Metrics tab on the web reader will also show you advanced article metric information to enhance your understanding while on the article itself. View the Dimensions score, Altmeric score, full citation count recent citations.

What is the Dimensions Badge?

The Dimensions badge shows the total citation count for an article. By clicking the badge, the Dimensions page will open where it will display connecting any grants, publications, citations, alternative metrics, clinical trials, patents and policy documents that came from the article.

What is the Altmetric score?

The Altmetric Attention Score is a weighted count of all of the online attention Altmetric have found for individual research output. This includes mentions in public policy documents and references in Wikipedia, mainstream news, social networks, blogs and more.

Altmetric article page

What is the Relative Citation Ratio?

The RCR indicates the relative citation performance of a publication when comparing its citation rate to that of other publications in its area of research. A value of more than 1.0 shows a citation rate above average.

What is the Field Citation Ratio?

The FCR compares articles in similar subject areas. The FCR has a normalized range of 1.0 for each article. A score above 1.0 shows that the publication has more citations than other articles in its field.

Transferring your library from Endnote https://www.papersapp.com/highlights/switching-from-endnote/ Wed, 18 Dec 2019 06:00:21 +0000 https://readcubepapers.staging.wpengine.com/?p=1225 So you want to move reference managers? So you want to move reference managers? The thought of transferring over your library to a new reference manager can seem daunting, especially if you have an extensive library filled with PDFS, folders, and of course, all your notes and annotations. Luckily, ReadCube Papers makes it easy to transfer your library over from another reference manager.

In this series of blog posts, we’ll guide you through moving to ReadCube Papers from another tool so, you don’t have to start from scratch.

Today we will focus on transferring your library from EndNote.

Exporting your Metadata

If you’re coming from EndNote, we’ve made transferring seamless within the ReadCube Papers desktop app. First, if you don’t already have it installed, you’re going to want to download Papers to your computer (Mac/Windows).

There are two parts to getting your information out of EndNote and into ReadCube Papers. We’ll start by exporting your metadata first.

Select all the references you want to export from your library.

screenshot of EndNote library

Next, you need to export your references’ metadata via an XML file. Head to File > Export > Save File Type as XML

Be sure to name your EndNote Library, something easy to remember and a folder you can easily access, such as your Desktop.

Grabbing those PDFs

There is no need to export your PDFs. EndNote stores all your associated files in a folder “My EndNote Library.data

screenshot of EndNote PDF files located on desktop

Make sure you know where this folder is located, you will need it soon.

Transfer Time

Open ReadCube Papers and head to Add > Add Files. The Import Files box will open for you to select Import From EndNote Library. Select the XML file you exported under the Browse Files.

If you want to bring over your PDFs browse for that “My EndNote Library.data” folder from before under the Select Data Directory field. Open it and then select PDF > Open.

You can choose to import all these files into a specific list or hit Import Files to transfer all the files into your general Papers library.

*Note, the EndNote Library Transfer is currently only available in the desktop app. If you are solely using the web app, you can follow the same workflow on how to transfer from another reference manager to get your EndNote library into the ReadCube Papers web app.

What about my notes?

Fear not, when you upload any PDFs from your other reference manager, ReadCube Papers will convert them all to our own note system. You will be able to edit, add and remove any notes from the PDF.

Plus, all your notes will be visible in the left-hand panel.

*When transferring your notes over from EndNote, be sure you select the correct PDF folder, especially if you have multiple EndNote libraries.

As September ramps up, we wanted to ensure we’ve answered all of your questions on how Shared Folders in Papers can keep you one step ahead on all your collaborative projects.

What are Shared Folders?

Shared Folders are collections that allow you to share full-text articles and citations with other researchers. As part of a shared collection, you can see any annotations, highlights, and drawings your peers are making on a PDF in real-time.

Within ReadCube Papers you have the ability to create 5 different shared folders and invite up to 25 people to each folder. The best part – even if your partners do not have a ReadCube Papers account, they can take advantage of our 30-day trial to gain access to the shared folders.

Creating Shared folders

The easiest project you will have this semester is setting up your group’s Shared Library.

Navigate over to the + Icon in your library and begin adding in your team members’ emails.

Start dragging and dropping articles into your shared library!

Staying Organized

Create Lists and nested lists based on the papers and sections you are working on. This will help you find the citations you need when it’s time to write your paper.

Screenshot of Lists in Shared Library.

Stay up to date on the papers your team members are reading. Check the Recently Read folder to see articles you may have missed that were imported by other members. The articles in bold are the ones you haven’t read yet!

Screenshot of unread articles in ReadCube Papers Shared Library

Give each team member a color. This will help keep your annotations organized and you’ll know which member made what annotation.

Screenshot of notes and highlights in ReadCube Papers Web Reader

If you do forget the color scheme you can always navigate to the Notes panel to see exactly who made what note.

Lastly, if you want a paper for later in the semester or another class you can move your Shared Folder articles directly into your Personal Library. Just grab the articles you want, drag and drop into your library and be sure to either choose whether you want to include your team members annotations or start reading from scratch!

We wish everyone good luck starting off the new school year! Remember, you can always apply for a student discount and save time organizing and reading with ReadCube Papers!

Feature Update – Table of Contents & Page Thumbnails

Based on great user feedback we’ve received from our first edition of this post we’ve added in two new features to help you read better. You can now pull up the Table of Contents and Page Thumbnails for articles, even if they didn’t originally have this.

Why mess with the PDF in the first place?

One of the great things about reading an article in PDF format vs reading on a publisher website is the consistency. No matter what the publisher, the look and feel are similar (which isn’t the case for publishers’ websites). The drawback to just downloading the PDF is that the minute you download it, you lose the connection to elements around it:

For example:

  • You have to remember to download the supplements and rename them so you can find them later on your desktop
  • If you want to check a referenced article, you need to scroll to the bottom of the page, copy and paste that reference into Google… find the article… or try to remember to do it later
  • To understand the impact of a paper or how other people are citing it… again all something you need to consciously check and monitor
  • To access the original high resolution images, either you hunt on the publisher’s article page to see if they are available, or grab a screenshot.

These friction points inspired the ReadCube Papers team to develop our interactive PDF viewer known as the Enhanced PDF.

Enhanced PDF 101

With our Enhanced PDF, all of your annotations and article information are located within a central place. From top to bottom, left to right, the ReadCube Papers Web Reader is full of interactive features, which means you spend more time reading and less time searching.

Your Annotations Your Way

With the standard PDF, your limited note and annotation type set live only within that document. You may forget what article you were reading and wasting time searching through your extensive library. Or, even worse, you may be traveling and not have the article on your device at all.

With the ReadCube Papers web reader your sync-able articles and annotations go where you go. Our suite of annotation tools let you mark up your PDF the way you want, quickly run a search of your notes, and even share your comments and highlights with colleagues.

Pro Tip: Right-click for easy access to the suite of annotation tools

Access to Article Material

Another challenge with standard PDFs is that they are flat and manual. Anytime you want to look at a reference article, you have to scroll to the bottom of the paper, copy and paste the information into a new tab, start a search, and finally (maybe) get to the publisher page.

The Enhanced PDF transforms in-line citations that link out to the cited article, which means more reading time for you.

Here is your Guide to the Buttons

Figures are also viewable in-line, so you never have to scroll to a different page to view the material.

Need the supplemental information mentioned in the article? Well, you probably didn’t download it initially, so now you need to start a new search, in a new tab, and continue down this dark loop of accessing the literature you need.

The Web Reader has the unique ability to find and stream supplemental files automatically. Simply click the Supplements tab (should your article contain additional files) and view or download the included material, without worrying about having to search for it yourself.

Pro Tip: For supplemental video materials, effortlessly watch them from your current window, without navigating away from your article or browser tab!

Metrics Made Easy

Here at ReadCube, we’re big data nerds. We like to know the surrounding information about the article, including its impact and visibility. To do this, we’ve created an entire Metrics page on the Enhanced PDF so you can see how widely talked about and relevant each article is in its field.

Article metrics in ReadCube Papers Web Reader Metrics Pane

What’s more, since articles are feed directly from the publisher, the metrics are all updated in real time, meaning you always see the most up to date citation counts and more!

Here is your key to the metrics tab:

Beyond the PDF

You’re done reading the article, you have your list of citations added into your library, but you still you just can’t seem to find that additional article that will piece your research together. So what do you do? Start another search from scratch? Head into the same search path you were already on and see the same articles?

We’ve been there. That’s why within the Enhanced PDF, we not only give you the tools to help you read and annotate, but we also assist in helping you discover more of the literature you need. On the article level, our Related Articles Feed will comb through the entire PDF, so you do not only see the top 10 articles about title and author but also articles matching the full context of the information you’re currently reading.
