When you select a reference in your library, the right side panel will open. At the top of this panel is a number of options for the article, including the “Files” option. Select this option to see all files associated with that reference:

To add new files to the selected reference, drag-and-drop the files into the empty space in the panel or click the “+Add files” button at the bottom:

To delete a file, click “More” next to the file you want to delete and select the “Delete File” option:

Navigating between articles and figures is simple in the Papers reader. 

While reading an article, you can easily select the “Figures” tab from the navigation bar at the top of the page. This button will bring up a list of available figures for easy viewing. To view a figure, click on it directly from the list available in the sidebar on your left-hand side:

When you select an inline citation, you will get a popup listing the included reference(s). Papers will recognize any articles or citations you already have in your library and mark it with the “In Library” field. 

Clicking on an article title will take you to that article’s webpage. You can easily add those references to your library by clicking on the “Add to Library” button, or you can view the PDFs. The “Get PDF” option will try to locate and access the PDF, if access is available.

In this article you will find information on various features that are available when viewing content in the Enhanced PDF Reader.

Top Panel

Here you can change the theme of your library view, use our AI assistant and if there are any supplements or figures associated with the article there will be options to view.

Informational Panel

Here you can view:

  • Notes
  • Attached Article Supplements (where available)
  • Article Figures
  • Metrics
  • Related Articles
  • Full Citation List
  • Export Options

In-Line Citations

Hover your mouse to pull up:

  • Author Information 
  • Inline References 
  • Inline Figures 

Viewer Settings

Navigate to the lower right-hand corner to adjust different viewer settings:

  • Zoom In and Out
  • Rotate the Article Orientation
  • Fit to Page
  • Page Thumbnails
  • Article Outline
  • Find text

Right-click Menu

Easily access different commands when you right-click over text:

  • Right Click on highlighted plain text
  • Right Click on Notes

With the Papers Enhanced PDF Reader, exporting your notes to a .CSV or .TXT file is quick and easy. Follow these steps to do so:

  1. Open the PDF and Go to the Notes Section
    • In the menu panel, navigate to the Notes section.
  2. Export Your Notes
    • Select the “Export All” option from the drop-down menu.
  3. Download the File
    • Your notes will automatically download as a .CSV or .TXT file to your Downloads folder.

This feature makes it easy to back up or share your notes, improving your research workflow in Papers.

Easily access and manage an article’s references using the Papers Web Reader. Follow these steps:

Viewing the Full Bibliography

  1. Navigate to the top of the web reader and open the menu bar on the left-hand side.
  2. Select “References” to view all references listed in the journal’s default order.

Accessing PDFs

  • Next to each reference, click the “Get PDF” / “View PDF” link to access the article PDF.
  • Papers will automatically recognize references or PDFs already in your library.

Adding Citations to Your Library

  • Use the “Add to Library” button to directly import any citations into your library for future access.

By leveraging these features, you can efficiently manage citations and enhance your research workflow with Papers.

If an article has supplemental files available, you’ll see a number in the top-left menu bar indicating the total number of available files. Follow these steps to access them:

  1. Locate the Supplemental Files Icon
    • Look for the numbered icon in the menu bar.
  1. Open the Supplemental Files Panel
    • Click the icon to view a panel listing all available supplemental files.
  1. Access the Files
    • Click on any file in the panel to open it directly in the Papers reader.

This feature makes it easy to review and manage additional research materials included with your articles.

When you select a reference in your library, the right side panel will open. At the top of this panel is a number of options for the article, including the “Files” option. Select this option to see all files associated with that reference:

Papers Classic

(The following instructions are for the classic version of Papers.)

When you select a reference in your library, the right side panel will open. At the top of this panel is a number of options for the article, including the “Files” option. Select this option to see all files associated with that reference. Note: if a supplement is already present, the number of additional files will appear in red.

Select the “Files” icon to view the files associated with an article.

In order to add a new supplement to the article, drag and drop additional PDFs directly into the blank space available or click “+Add Files” at the bottom of the panel:
