One of the benefits of Papers browser extension is the ability to quickly save an article—or its metadata—to your Papers library.

You can import one or multiple references directly from search results in a couple of different ways. To import selected articles, look for the blue (+) ReadCube button

Note that whatever library you select will be the default library for future imports until you change it.

To import multiple articles at once, head into the Papers extension on your browser (this option is usually on the upper right hand side of your browser window). Here, you can select multiple references, or all search results

Once you have the articles selected for import, click “select library” and select the library you’d like the content imported into. Note, the library you select will be remembered for the next import.

Then click “add” and the selected references will be imported into your library.

Papers offers several ways to import references from web pages and web search results.

To import a reference directly from search results such as PubMed or publisher web pages, be sure to install our browser extension for the browser of your choice.

With the extension installed, you can import articles directly from search results into your ReadCube library:

You can import using our extension menu on the top right of your browser, or by clicking on the “Add to library” button next to the article itself. For more information on our browser extension, please check our guide here.

Individual webpages can also be added to your Papers library, in one of the two ways described below.

You can either import webpages via the extension by clicking on the extension to activate it on a webpage and then selecting the “Add to library” button:

Or you can manually enter website information via the “Create Manual Entry” option directly in Papers by clicking the “+” button, selecting “Create Manual Entry…” and then manually inputting the webpage information:

The Papers browser extension allows you to seamlessly import articles to your library directly from your web browser. Find papers as you normally would on Dimensions, PubMed, Google Scholar and journal websites, then add them to your ReadCube library using the browser extension. References can be added to any of the lists in your library, along with optional notes, and the extension will automatically import the associated PDF, if possible.

Google Chrome

  1. Install the browser extension from here.
  2. Confirm you want to add the browser extension.
  3. Sign in with the email address of your Papers account:
  4. The extension will be located in the top right corner of your browser, next to the search bar.

Apple Safari

  1. Download the browser extension here.
  2. Click “Get.”
  3. After the extension has been added to your browser, sign in to your Papers account.

Microsoft Edge

  1. Download the browser extension here.
  2. Click “Get” and select “Add extension” in the popup window that appears.
  3. The extension will then be added and you can pin it to your taskbar by clicking on the “Extensions” icon and selecting the “Show in toolbar” button:

Mozilla Firefox

1.) Click “Add to Firefox” and then “Add” in the small permissions window that appears:

2.) Then, sign in to your ReadCube account.

3.) The extension will notify you of a successful sign-in and an extension button will be located in the top right corner of your browser window, next to the search bar.

Here is a quick overview and a short explanation of the buttons you will see when using our browser extension.

You can select a single or multiple articles for import, select which library you’ve like them imported into and more:

In the Settings of the browser extension, you’ll also have more options including the ability to “enable additional sources”, so if the import from the publisher fails, the browser extension will search for another source to import that article from:

Previous versions of the extension would try to locate the article DOI and then input extension buttons next to the title. This caused certain issues due to the fact that different publisher websites have different layouts.

The extension sidebar is a solution that works around those issues and allows users to add papers to their library quickly and easily, no matter which website they are on. The sidebar also shows a preview of the first page of the associated PDF so you can make sure you’re viewing the page of the PDF you want.

You can enable or disable the sidebar by toggling the option in extension settings, which can be accessed by clicking on the extension icon (next to your search bar) and clicking on “Settings”.

Google Scholar has made some changes and no longer allows us to input extension buttons on their page. However, we have developed a solution that will work on every website and will enable you to import articles without extension buttons on the webpage.

Search on Google Scholar as you normally would. As you can see below, there are no extension buttons available next to article titles. However, the extension icon (Papers logo) next to your search bar now displays numbers. Clicking on the icon will display a dropdown list of all articles available on the page.

The extension shows information if an article is already in your library. You can also view full text (by clicking on View PDF) if the article is an open access one or already part of your library.

You can select multiple articles at the same time and import them to your Papers library at once. To do this check the box next to each article and click on “Select Library” to choose the library you’d like this content imported into:

Then click “Add” on the bottom left, and you’ll see those articles begin to import.
