To launch AI in the reader, head to the Papers web app and open the article of your choice. From there, look for the “AI” button on the upper left of the screen:

This will launch the AI assistant in a new menu where you can ask any number of questions to help you better understand and benefit from your research.

Some example queries are:

– Summarize this article
– Summarize this article in simple terms
– Translate this article in [language of your choice]
– Was this article peer reviewed?
– Ask AI to define word or concept from article
– Summarize the key findings from this paper

And that’s not the only way to enhance your research with AI in ReadCube. With a subscription to ReadCube, you’ll also have access to our AI Assisted Query Builder, which allows you to convert natural language into search friendly terms.

Open the article you wish to use with the AI Assistant and navigate to the AI button on the upper left hand menu:

Here are some examples of some questions/commands which you can ask the Papers AI Assistant:

– summarize the article, including in another language

– break down complex terminology into simple terms

– provide additional information to concepts you may not fully comprehend 

– recommend similar articles, and much, much more

We have designed our AI Assistant to focus on answering specific questions contained within the opened research paper, rather than relying on broad knowledge trained within large language models. This can help mitigate the probability of hallucinations (nonsensical or inaccurate AI outputs), but there is always the possibility the AI may misinterpret a question or fail to extract the correct context. Accuracy may also vary depending on the topic. We encourage you to refer back to the full text to verify answers, and in many cases our AI Assistant will point you to the specific paragraphs from which an answer was obtained.

To activate it, select up to 20 articles in your library and right-click to “ask AI Assistant”:

This will launch a new window where you can ask Papers AI to find commonalities in the selected papers:

For example, you can ask:

– what are the main research methods?- what is the most common conclusion in these articles?- is there any mention of [drug, disease, etc] in these articles?
– do any of these articles reference each other?
– what do these articles have in common?

Then, simply hit “ask” and the AI Assistant will get to work:

Papers AI will not only answer your query, but show you exactly where in the articles you can find that specific information.

For example, here we have asked Papers AI which species of sharks are mentioned in a group of articles. Once it finishes analysing, Papers provides a summary of its findings – in this case, the names of the various species of sharks – and also generates a reference list of those articles from your library.

By clicking on “show evidence”, Papers will show you exactly where the cited information appears within that paper:
